Year 6 Children’s Programme

Our Aim

The Children’s Programme aims to show pupils that they should be taking personal responsibility for their own safety. Lifeskills makes their learning experience more memorable by using fun and interactive methods to teach them how to assess risks and cope with any potentially difficult or dangerous situations.

It is recognised by parents, teachers, staff and governors that safety education is one of the most important health related topics to be covered within the curriculum. Emphasis is placed upon it by the government within the National Healthy School Standard and the Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) framework. A visit to the Centre is a good way to support and complement this work.

Who We Educate?

The Children’s Programme has been developed specifically for Year 6 Primary School children (10-11 years of age).

How is the Programme Taught

The Lifeskills Centre provides an environment where pupils can learn safety skills in a realistic and practical way but can also test their knowledge and practise the skills they have learnt. The Chinese proverb ‘I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand’ sums up the Lifeskills experience.

The children work in small groups (4 max) with a Volunteer Guide who takes them around the 10 different scenarios to work through various interactive safety related activities.  This is followed by a short feedback session where all of the children are given the chance to talk about what they have learned. Each session lasts 2 hours.

Lifeskills can accommodate a maximum of 42 children per session. There is no charge for any accompanying adults. You will need to arrange and pay for your own transport.
