day.
TOTAL - UK, road and home accidents account
for about 20 deaths every day.
Every year some 30,000 youngsters in the former Avon area (Bristol
City, Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire)
require hospital treatment for injuries - many of which could have
been prevented through appropriate education and training.
Clearly the need to instil basic safety skills throughout the entire
community is crucial.

UK STATISTICS
Home
and Garden
Most common injuries are as a result of home accidents occurring
in the living/dining room (311,621 in 2002) and the kitchen (261,949
in 2002). Many accidents are also recorded in the garden, path and
driveways and garden sheds (474,166 in 2002).

Road
During 2004 there were 207,000 personal injury accidents on
British roads resulting in 280,840 casualties (3,221 killed, 34,351
seriously injured, 243,268 slightly injured).

Water
High death and injury statistics are also recorded for drowning
and water accidents (427 drownings in 2002) in descending order - from rivers and streams,
coastal regions, lakes, reservoirs, home baths, canals, docks, harbours,
swimming pools and garden ponds.

Railway
During 2005 there were 5,172 casualties from train accidents from
the movement of railway vehicles and accidents on railway premises
including 33 fatalities, 332 serious injuries, 4,807 minor injuries
- there were also 280 deaths and 127 injuries to trespassers and suicides. |

Fire
During 2005 Fire & Rescue Services attended 867,000 fires or false
alarms in the UK. There were 485 deaths
and 14,000 non-fatal casualties.
