General road safety is covered, including the need for barriers,
road markings, speed limits, cycle safety and in-car safety.
There is a car at the far end of the road travelling at 30mph.
Somebody has just stepped out into the road, the driver reacts and
slams a foot on the brake pedal. Where do you think the car will
stop?

Supermarket

Groups go shopping in a Somerfield supermarket. They are made aware
of checking prices, 'best before' and 'sell by' dates, the importance
of preventing cross-contamination of different food types, and legal age limits
for buying items. They should check their change and understand
the importance of keeping a receipt.

Garage

Groups are made aware of basic effects of legal substances
(tobacco, alcohol and solvents); four different types of drug
(illegal, over-the-counter, prescribed and legal and commonly used)
and also the people that could be affected by someone taking illegal
drugs.

House upstairs

Here there is a bathroom, hallway and bedrooms. In
these rooms they identify hazards � slips and trips, burns and
scalds, poisons, electrical and fire. Do you have a fire escape
plan?

House downstairs

Having safely crossed the road using the puffin crossing we enter
the living room, hallway and kitchen where groups will hazard spot,
make-safe as appropriate, discuss security and react to the smell
of gas.

Garden

Groups will spot potential hazards e.g. paddling pool, fireworks,
bonfire, barbecue, lawnmower, garden shed and sunburn.

Sub-station

Here groups will be faced with high voltage cables (complete with
hanging kite), a high voltage transformer and other hazards.

Dark alleyway

Choose between long light way home or short dark alley!

Building site

|
Here groups will see all known hazards associated with building
sites including mechanical equipment, dangerous scaffolding, chemicals
and trip hazards.

Playground

Groups will learn the basics of first aid - 'DRAB' - checking for
dangers, checking for a response from the casualty, opening an airway
and then seeing if the casualty is breathing. They then make an
emergency telephone call, asking for an ambulance.

River

Crossing the bridge, groups go across the river,
discuss the effects of pollution, learn what to do if somebody
is in the water and talk about 'stranger danger' issues when trying
to get some assistance from a local cottage.

Railway

Just when you thought all was calm, you then come across a railway
line. Oh no! A train is due and there are things on the track.
What are you going to do?

Farm

Down on the farm groups find out about the Countryside Code - close
those gates, keep to footpaths, keep pets under control. The countryside
is potentially an extremely dangerous place - look out for the hazards!

Activities/Meeting Room

Here, information and resources are found, groups assemble for
introduction and debrief sessions. It has a full audio, video conference
facility.
